16 and 21, spool, four or six over, black paint and a little chrome. In 1970 my friends all had mild choppers. Check any old photos and you'll almost always see the tubes pulled through an inch or so. Then you can pull the fork tubes thru the clamps to steepen the head angle if you need to. XR head angle is 26* ? Or maybe 27* ? The road race versions were 25* or 26* depending on who and when. I've read where several people feel the dirt XR is "too twitchy" at high speeds. Way to screw up a nice product, HD.)īut the 30* head angle. Now you can't chop it, it's not an original, and it's not a good sport bike. Motor stuff is great but if the frame doesn't work, what good is it ? And the '80-type frame is so unloved (for good reason. (and the state might still blue tag it)Īnother great reason not to live in Commiefornia. If you have a titled pre-70's motor it might be register-able in that context. Otherwise it would be blue tagged with a special construction title and a state assigned VIN. I would expect a possible issue they might have with that would be involve some sort of destruction of the neck so it could not be reused. Prior consultation with the mounties may present the ability to have the frame blue tagged by presenting the original neck with the frame for tagging. Even though the spirit of the thing is followed and the correct VIN applied, a "modifier" cannot apply another's VIN.

Hand stamping the original VIN would not be acceptable either as only the originator can apply numbers. Perhaps if it was blue tagged in an area that will not get cut prior to mods? Surely removing the VIN would be considered an alteration. "No person shall alter or possess a vehicle with an altered VIN." In Kalifornia this would be considered a felony. The next thing is to get the motor together, I'll have more on that later but right now I have to stop to do my customer frames and build oil tanks and fuel tank mounts for them. Nothing says dirt track like dirt track wheels and tires. Tank and seat were ordered in orange jellcoat, just like the real thing.ĭirt Trackers need dirt track fork stops right? Seat mounts and new oil tank mounts were added along with the seat mounting tabs at the rear. So, they were cut off ,reversed and mounted ahead of the axle in the correct place. The only thing wrong with the swingarm is the shock mounts are too far back, actually behind the axle which looks goofy. I will be using a 68 CH motor with an early cam cover to give it the correct "Waffle Iron" look. The customer is out of money right now so it's sitting in my family room. Everything is there except 2 motors and some chain guards. Mct496 - the double is now a complete roller with jackshaft ,slipper clutch, oil and fuel tanks ,fender, etc.

Somebody on here I'm sure knows more about that than I do though. I will not be stamping numbers.ĭon Burton - yes ,with the exception of a few brackets I believe they are the same as an XLCR. He said just give him the neck casting back and he'd take care of the rest. One of the bikes I'm building for a customer will have dehumped 73=76 cases. I already have three to do for customers. Here it's dummied up to get an idea of where it's headed, More to come later. The top motor mount bung has been added at this point.īuilding with tubing is all about the fit. It was decided to retain the 30 degree rake of the Sportster rather than use the twitchy 26 degrees of the XR. Here the back bone has been sleeved and spliced. The races for the Timken bearings will press in the ends. This will be reinforced by the new top motor mount that will come later.Ī new steering head is machined from DOM tubing. This what we start with, the rear half is almost identical to an XR. of cast neck and convert to the xr style neck. Of all the Sportster frames ,the '79-'81 is the closest thing to an XR frame.Īll that's required is to remove a bunch of extra brackets, cut off 11 lbs. This project has been on my mental drawing board since 1979.
